Case IH 736-01 - DEC – Transmission Controller (TCU): Transmission C3 clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage low
Issue description
The control module is detecting that the voltage on the electrical circuit for the C3 clutch solenoid has dropped below the expected operational threshold. This condition is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, a disconnected plug, or an internally failed solenoid coil.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH MX Series Magnum Tractors
- Case IH Magnum Series
- Case IH TG Series Tractors
Check the cause
Inspect Connector No. 32 at the C3 clutch solenoid on the powershift valve block for loose, corroded, or pushed-out pins.
Trace the wiring harness from Connector 32 back to the Transmission Controller, looking for chafed wires, pinch points, or melted insulation causing a short to ground.
Disconnect the C3 solenoid and measure resistance across its pins with a multimeter (an open reading or 0 ohms confirms internal failure).
With the key ON, check for proper reference voltage at the harness connector to rule out a failed transmission controller driver.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the park brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Solenoid
Access the transmission powershift valve assembly (typically located on the side of the transmission housing). Identify the C3 clutch solenoid (grouped with the C1 and C5 solenoids).
Remove the Solenoid
Disconnect the electrical connector (Connector 32). Remove the solenoid retaining nut (typically torqued to only 5-6 ft-lbs; do not force it). Carefully unthread and extract the solenoid cartridge from the valve body.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the new O-rings/seals with clean transmission hydraulic fluid. Thread the new solenoid cartridge into the valve block and torque to approximately 18 ft-lbs. Install the retaining nut and tighten to 5-6 ft-lbs.
Reassembly and Calibration
Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery. Clear the fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic display. Perform a Transmission Clutch Calibration procedure so the TCU can learn the fill times and engagement characteristics of the new C3 solenoid.
