Case IH 736-03 - DEC – DEC: Transmission C3 clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage above normal

Issue description

The controller has detected that the voltage on the C3 clutch solenoid circuit is higher than expected. This typically indicates a short to power (the circuit is receiving battery voltage when it shouldn't be) or an open circuit (a broken wire or disconnected plug) that causes the controller's sensing circuit to default to a high voltage reading.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the C3 clutch solenoid (Connector No. 32 on Magnum models) for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires

  2. Disconnect the C3 solenoid plug and check for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture inside the connector

  3. Perform a voltage test to check for a short to power: With the key ON and the solenoid disconnected, probe the harness side of the connector. A constant 12V on the control wire indicates the wiring harness is shorted to a power source

  4. Perform a resistance test to check for an open circuit: Measure the resistance across the two pins of the C3 solenoid coil. A healthy coil should read between 7 to 15 ohms. An 'OL' (infinite resistance) reading means the internal coil winding is broken and the solenoid must be replaced

  5. Ensure the ground circuit returning to the DEC/TCU is intact and has good continuity

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, apply the parking brake, and relieve all hydraulic pressure.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Access the transmission powershift valve block. Identify the C3 clutch solenoid (refer to the valve block diagram; it is usually grouped with the C1, C2, C4, and C5 solenoids).

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the C3 solenoid.

  5. Remove the Coil/Valve

    If replacing just the coil: Remove the retaining nut at the end of the valve stem and slide the electromagnetic coil off the cartridge. If replacing the entire proportional valve cartridge: Use a wrench to unscrew the cartridge from the manifold block. Be prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic fluid.

  6. Install the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new valve with clean hydraulic fluid (e.g., Case IH Akcela Nexplore). Thread the valve into the manifold and tighten to the OEM torque specification. Slide the coil on and secure the retaining nut.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in.

  8. Calibration

    Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard display. Crucial Step: You must perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure (often accessible via the tractor's display monitor) so the DEC can learn the fill time and engagement pressure of the new C3 solenoid.
