Case IH 736-04 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission C3 clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage below normal

Issue description

The control module is detecting a lower-than-expected voltage on the circuit responsible for actuating the C3 clutch solenoid. This condition is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, a failing solenoid coil, or a poor connection at the solenoid terminal.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a battery and system voltage check using a load tester to ensure the battery has not dropped below 75% of its rated CCA, as a failing battery or alternator can cause system-wide voltage dips.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the C3 clutch solenoid (specifically Connector No. 32) for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

  3. Perform a solenoid resistance test by disconnecting the C3 clutch solenoid and using a multimeter to measure the resistance across the coil pins to determine if the coil is internally shorted or open.

  4. Perform a circuit continuity test between the TCU output pin and the solenoid connector to rule out a broken wire in the harness.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Access the transmission powershift control valve block. The C3 clutch solenoid is typically located alongside the C1, C2, and C5 solenoids on the valve body.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Carefully unplug the electrical connector (Connector No. 32) from the C3 clutch solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid Coil

    Remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the hydraulic cartridge valve. Slide the old solenoid coil off the stem.

  5. Install the New Solenoid

    Slide the replacement solenoid coil onto the cartridge valve stem.

  6. Torque to Spec

    Install the retaining nut. Caution: Do not over-torque the nut, as this can damage the solenoid. The standard torque specification for the solenoid retaining nut is 5-6 ft-lbs (the cartridge itself is torqued to approx. 18 ft-lbs).

  7. Reconnect and Test

    Reconnect the electrical connector, reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes, and operate the tractor to verify that the transmission shifts correctly without triggering the 736-04 code.
