Case IH 736-13 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission C3 clutch solenoid out of calibration

The Transmission Control Unit has lost the calibration values for the C3 transmission range clutch solenoid, or a recent calibration attempt failed or was aborted. The controller needs to know the exact electrical current required to move the C3 proportional valve enough to engage the clutch. Without these learned values, the transmission cannot shift smoothly or may disable the affected gears entirely.

   Ensure transmission fluid is warmed up to operating temperature (strictly above 60°C / 140°F)

   Verify engine speed can be held steady at 1200 RPM (± 100 RPM) during the calibration process

   Verify the tractor is completely stationary with the parking brake applied and the shift lever in neutral

   Check for related active electrical fault codes for the C3 solenoid (e.g., E40 or E41) or failed speed/temperature sensors, which will block the calibration routine

   Start the engine, turn off the air conditioning, and apply the handbrake.

   Ensure the tractor is safely parked and prepared for calibration.

   Warm the transmission oil to at least 60°C (140°F).

   The transmission fluid must be at operating temperature for a successful calibration.

   Enter the transmission calibration mode.

   Often accessed via the instrument cluster diagnostic switches or a dealer laptop, displaying "CAL" or "H1" on the dash.

   Set the engine speed to 1200 RPM.

   Hold the engine RPM steady during the calibration process.

   Select the C3 clutch calibration routine.

   Depending on the model, this is usually done by pressing and holding the "Upshift" button.

   Observe the display for a flashing number.

   The number scrolls up as the controller increases electrical current to the C3 solenoid.

   Keep holding the button until the processor detects a sudden decrease in engine RPM.

   Usually a 50 RPM drop, which confirms the C3 clutch has physically engaged and loaded the engine.

   Release the button when the number on the display stops flashing and becomes fixed.

   This indicates the calibration value has been successfully saved.

   Turn off the ignition key.

   This allows the TCU to power down and store the new values in its memory.

    Remove, inspect, and replace the C3 solenoid valve if necessary.

    Perform this step if the calibration repeatedly fails, as the C3 proportional valve may be mechanically stuck, or the clutch pack seals are leaking.
