736-18 - DEC

Case IH 736-18 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission C3 clutch solenoid minimum quick fill calibration time limit was exceeded

Issue description

During the transmission's automatic calibration cycle, the controller fully pressurizes the clutch element and monitors the engine speed droop to determine the exact volume of fluid and time required to fill the clutch so it begins to carry torque. If this 'quick fill' process takes longer than the programmed maximum time limit, the calibration fails. This typically points to an inability to build or hold pressure in the C3 clutch circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum Series (235–340 Series 4, MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285)
  • Case IH Puma Series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225)
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness to the C3 clutch solenoid for an open circuit or a short to ground (electrical cause).

  2. Swap the C3 clutch solenoid/valve with a neighboring solenoid (such as the C4 solenoid) to see if the fault follows the solenoid or stays with the C3 circuit (electrical cause).

  3. Remove the transmission control valve assembly and apply air pressure directly to the C3 clutch pressure pipe. Listen closely: if air can be heard escaping and pressure does not build, there is a mechanical leak inside the clutch pack (mechanical cause).

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Failure

Based on the diagnostic checks, determine if the issue is electrical (solenoid/wiring) or mechanical (internal clutch leak).

  2. Solenoid Replacement (If Electrical)

Locate the C3/C4 manifold on the transmission. Using a suitable punch, remove the retaining pins. Remove the plug, spring, and the faulty C3 lubrication proportional valve/solenoid. Install the new solenoid, springs, and retaining pins.

  3. Clutch Pack Repair (If Mechanical)

If the air test failed, the transmission must be split/disassembled to access the C3 clutch pack. Replace the damaged piston seals, sealing rings on the distribution tube, or worn friction discs causing the pressure loss.

  4. Fluid Fill

Prior to reassembly and testing, ensure the system is filled with clean CASE IH AKCELA NEXPLORE™ FLUID.

  5. Recalibration

Warm up the tractor. Enter the transmission calibration mode (on some models, this is done by pressing and holding the upshift/downshift buttons on the main gear lever or using a pushbutton switch on the Service Diagnostic Connector). Run the automatic calibration procedure so the TCU can relearn the C3 clutch spring pressure and quick fill volumes.
