Case IH 737-01 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or main vehicle ECU: Transmission C4 clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage low
Issue description
The control module has detected that the electrical circuit operating the C4 clutch solenoid has dropped below the expected voltage threshold. This condition is typically caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, an open circuit or disconnected plug, or a failed or internally shorted solenoid coil.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller to the C4 clutch solenoid for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation.
Disconnect the C4 clutch solenoid connector (X-041) and check for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.
Measure the resistance of the C4 clutch solenoid coil using a multimeter. If it reads out of OEM specification, shows an open, or a dead short, the solenoid coil is faulty.
Check for continuity between the TCU pin and the solenoid connector. Test the power wire for a short to ground.
Turn the key ON and verify that the TCU is sending the correct reference voltage to the solenoid connector.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve body on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the C4 clutch solenoid (refer to your specific model's service manual diagram).
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the valve body and solenoid with brake cleaner or compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the transmission.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector from the C4 solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring securing the solenoid to the manifold.
Extraction
Carefully pull the solenoid straight out. Inspect the bore for debris.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid. Carefully insert the new solenoid into the bore, ensuring the O-rings are not pinched.
Secure and Reconnect
Reinstall the retaining bolts/snap ring and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Testing
Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, clear the inactive fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and perform a test drive (shifting through the gears) to verify the C4 clutch engages properly and the code does not return.
