Case IH 737-03 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission Range Clutch C4 Solenoid - Voltage above normal, or shorted to high source

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected that the electrical circuit for the C4 clutch solenoid has a voltage reading that exceeds the valid operational range. This typically indicates that the signal wire is shorted to a high-voltage source (such as a 12V battery wire or a 5V reference wire) or that there is an open circuit causing the controller's internal pull-up voltage to read high.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness routing from the Transmission ECU to the right-hand side of the transmission where the clutch control valve block is located. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the C4 clutch solenoid (Connector X-041). Turn the key ON (engine off). Measure the voltage at the signal wire (e.g., wire 7840). If battery voltage is present when the controller is not commanding the solenoid, the harness is shorted to power.

  3. Measure the resistance across the C4 clutch solenoid pins. If the reading is completely open (infinite resistance), the solenoid coil has failed internally, which can trigger an FMI 03 on some CNH controllers.

  4. Check the X-041 connector for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins, which can bridge circuits and cause a short to a high source.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and turn off the master battery disconnect switch.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block, typically mounted on the right-hand side of the transmission housing. Identify the C4 clutch solenoid (often labeled or positioned sequentially with C1, C2, and C3 solenoids).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Depress the locking tab and disconnect the X-041 electrical connector from the C4 solenoid.

  4. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If diagnostic testing proved a short to power in the harness, trace the wire back to the Transmission ECU, cut out the damaged section, and splice in a new wire using weather-sealed crimp connectors. Replace the terminal connector or violet seal if the connector housing is damaged.

  5. Remove the Solenoid

    If the harness is good and the solenoid is internally shorted/open, thoroughly clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining bolt or snap ring holding the C4 solenoid in place.

  6. Install New Solenoid

    Pull the old solenoid straight out. Discard the old O-rings. Lubricate the O-rings on the new C4 clutch solenoid with clean transmission fluid and press it firmly into the valve body. Secure it with the retaining bolt/clip.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the X-041 electrical connector.

  8. Calibration

    Turn the battery disconnect switch back on. Power up the tractor and clear the inactive 737-03 fault code. Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure (often required when replacing a PWM clutch solenoid) to ensure the Transmission ECU learns the fill time of the new C4 solenoid.
