Case IH 737-04 - DEC – Transmission Control Module (TCU): Transmission C4 clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage below normal.
Issue description
The control module has detected that the voltage returning from the C4 clutch solenoid circuit is lower than the expected normal operating range. This typically indicates a short to ground in the wiring harness, a failed solenoid coil (internal short), or a severely corroded connector causing a voltage drop.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission valve block (specifically the C4 clutch solenoid) for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground.
Disconnect the C4 clutch solenoid connector and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the C4 clutch solenoid. Compare the reading to the OEM specification. A reading of near-zero ohms indicates an internally shorted solenoid coil that must be replaced.
With the battery disconnected and the TCU and solenoid unplugged, test the signal wire for continuity to ground. If there is continuity, the wiring harness has a short to ground and must be repaired.
If available, use the electronic service tool (EST) or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu to run a transmission active test. The system will attempt to pulse the C4 clutch solenoid with maximum current to verify circuit integrity.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block. Depending on the tractor model, the clutch solenoid valves are typically located on the top or the right-hand side of the transmission housing. Identify the C4 clutch solenoid.
Disconnect Wiring
Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the C4 solenoid. If the connector is brittle or damaged, it will need to be re-pinned with a new connector housing.
Remove the Solenoid
Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring holding the C4 solenoid in the valve block. Pull the solenoid straight out.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new C4 clutch solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware.
Reassemble and Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid. Reconnect the battery.
Calibration
Start the tractor and allow the transmission fluid to reach operating temperature. You must perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure (often accessible via the Pro 700 / AFS display or a diagnostic tool) so the TCU can learn the engagement characteristics of the new C4 clutch solenoid.
Clear Codes
Clear the 737-04 fault code from the TCU memory and test drive the tractor to verify proper shifting.
