737-16 - DEC

Case IH 737-16 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Transmission Controller: Transmission C4 clutch solenoid electrical circuit (voltage low)

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an electrical anomaly—typically an open circuit or a short circuit to ground—preventing the proper voltage from reaching or returning from the C4 clutch PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) solenoid.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Maxxum series (5120, 5130, 5140, 5150)

Check the cause

  1. Park the machine on firm ground, apply the parking brake, and shut down the engine/turn off the main power switch.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and the C4 clutch solenoid connector (Connector X-041) for damage or disconnected pins.

  3. Check the C4 PWM solenoid supply wire (Wire # 7840) and return wire (Wire # 7845) for an open circuit or short to ground. Measure the voltage on the circuit (average operating voltage is 8.5V).

  4. Measure the resistance of the wiring harness and solenoid. If the resistance is lower than 5Ω, the harness is likely normal, indicating the fault may be an internal open circuit within the sensor/solenoid itself.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Before disconnecting any hydraulic pipelines, verify that all pressure has been released. Bleed and drain residual pressure to avoid injury.

  2. Locate the Valve Block

Locate the transmission control valve / dynamic clutch control valve block, which is typically mounted on the right-hand side of the transmission.

  3. Disconnect Electrical Connections

Unplug the terminal connector (X-041) from the C4 clutch solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

Extract the faulty C4 clutch solenoid from the transmission control valve block.

  5. Install the New Solenoid and Seals

Insert the replacement C4 clutch solenoid. You must replace the sealing O-rings/seals (Seal part # 87685444) during installation to prevent hydraulic leaks.

  6. Reconnect and Calibrate

Reconnect the wiring harness. After repairing the circuit or replacing the solenoid, you must clear the fault codes and perform a transmission clutch calibration (the system will often throw a secondary code like 'E24 All clutches not calibrated' or 'C4 Clutch not calibrated' until this is done).

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Terminal Connector (C4 Clutch Solenoid)
