737-17 - DEC

Case IH 737-17 - DEC – Transmission Controller (TCU): Transmission Range Clutch C4 Solenoid - Data valid but below normal operating range (Least severe level)

Issue description

The Transmission C4 clutch solenoid minimum calibration current limit was exceeded (the current draw was too low). The system's controller detected that the electrical current required to actuate or calibrate the C4 clutch solenoid did not meet the minimum threshold, which typically points to high electrical resistance, an open circuit, a poor connection, or a failing solenoid coil.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum Series (180, 190, 200, 210, 220, 225, 240)
  • Maxxum Series (110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 150)
  • Puma Series (115 through 260)
  • Optum Series (250, 270, 300, 340)
  • Steiger / Quadtrac Series
  • MXU Series (MXU100, MXU110, MXU115, MXU135)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the machine harness and C4 clutch solenoid pins/connectors for corrosion, moisture, or damage

  2. Measure the resistance across the C4 clutch solenoid pins with a digital multimeter and compare to OEM specifications

  3. Check the supply and return wires from the Transmission Controller to the C4 solenoid for open circuits or shorts to ground

  4. Ensure the transmission oil temperature is within the normal operating range, as cold oil can affect calibration procedures

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position.

  2. Locate the Valve

Locate the transmission control valve block on the side or top of the transmission housing and identify the C4 clutch proportional solenoid valve.

  3. Remove the Solenoid

Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolts or retaining nut holding the solenoid coil/cartridge in place.

  4. Install the New Part

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid cartridge with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid valve into the manifold and tighten to the specified torque.

  5. Reconnect

Reattach the electrical connector and ensure it clicks securely into place.

  6. Calibrate

Turn the machine on and clear the inactive fault codes. Perform a full transmission clutch calibration procedure using the tractor's display monitor or diagnostic service tool to ensure the new C4 solenoid learns its fill times and current sweeps.
