741-03 - DEC

Case IH 741-03 - DEC – Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM): Transmission forward clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage above normal

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical circuit for the forward clutch solenoid has a voltage that is higher than the expected normal operating range. This typically indicates a short circuit to a high voltage source (short to power) or an open circuit in the wiring harness, connectors, or the internal coil of the solenoid itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • LB75.B Backhoe Loader (NA Version)
  • LB110.B Loader Backhoe
  • LB115 / LB115.B / LB115CP 4WS Tractor Loader Backhoes

Check the cause

  1. Scan and Verify: Use an electronic service tool to scan for all trouble codes to confirm if the issue is isolated to the forward clutch solenoid or if multiple solenoids are experiencing high voltage (which would point to a shared ground or supply issue).

  2. Visual Inspection: Inspect the transmission wiring harness and connectors for damaged wires, chafed insulation, corrosion, or poor connections.

  3. Voltage & Circuit Testing: Measure the voltage at the actuator supply circuit to ensure the TCM/PCM is providing the correct B+ voltage. Verify the health of the battery and charging system.

  4. Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the forward clutch solenoid and compare it to OEM specifications. An infinite reading indicates an open circuit inside the solenoid.

  5. Fluid Check: Check the transmission fluid level and condition. Severely contaminated fluid can cause solenoids to overheat and fail electrically.

Repair steps

  1. Drain Fluid

Safely drain the transmission fluid and remove the transmission pan (if the solenoid is located internally).

  2. Access the Solenoid

Depending on the transmission model, remove the valve body to access the forward clutch solenoid (on some models, the solenoid is accessible without full valve body removal).

  3. Remove the Faulty Component

Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty forward clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining clip or bolt and extract the solenoid.

  4. Install the New Part

Install the new solenoid, secure the retaining mechanism, and reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Reassembly

Reinstall the valve body (if removed) and the transmission pan using a new gasket.

  6. Refill and Test

Refill the transmission with fresh, clean transmission fluid. Clear the diagnostic trouble codes using a scan tool and test the machine to ensure the code does not return and the transmission shifts normally.
