Case IH 741-13 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission forward clutch solenoid out of calibration

Issue description

The Transmission Control Unit (TCU) has detected that the forward clutch proportional solenoid valve is out of calibration. This means the stored calibration values are outside of the acceptable programmed parameters, or a recent dynamic transmission calibration procedure failed or was aborted.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Maxxum series (5120, 5130, 5140, MXM140)
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Magnum series
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case IH Farmall series

Check the cause

  1. Verify the transmission hydraulic fluid level and condition, as low or degraded fluid can cause clutch pressure anomalies.

  2. Ensure the transmission oil is at the correct operating temperature (typically 35°C to 45°C / 95°F to 113°F).

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the forward clutch solenoid (often designated as circuit 4014 or 4015) for chafed wires, short circuits to ground, or open circuits.

  4. Test the forward clutch solenoid coil for proper resistance and amp draw, as a failing solenoid may pass a static resistance test but fail under load.

  5. Look for other active transmission fault codes (e.g., codes indicating a short circuit or open circuit on the Clutch A/Forward Clutch solenoid) which would point to a hard electrical failure.

Repair steps

  1. Warm Up the Tractor

Operate the tractor in both forward and reverse directions, cycling through the powershift speeds, until the transmission oil reaches the working temperature of 35°C to 45°C.

  2. Attempt Dynamic Calibration

Enter the transmission calibration mode using the tractor's A-post display, side console rocker switches, or an electronic diagnostic tool (like the CNH EST).

  3. Run the Procedure

Follow the on-screen or manual prompts to perform the dynamic transmission calibration. This usually requires the operator to shift the shuttle lever forward and wait for the controller to learn the proportional solenoid valve fill times and pressures.

  4. Replace the Solenoid (If Calibration Fails)

If the calibration repeatedly fails, aborts, or the tractor lunges abnormally, the forward clutch solenoid valve is likely mechanically sticking or electrically failing.

  5. Installation

Depressurize the system, locate the transmission control valve block, remove the retaining hardware, and swap the faulty forward clutch solenoid with a new OEM replacement.

  6. Recalibrate

After installing the new solenoid, clear all inactive fault codes and repeat the dynamic transmission calibration procedure from Step 1 to teach the TCU the flow characteristics of the new valve.
