741-18 - DEC

Case IH 741-18 - DEC – DEC: Transmission forward clutch solenoid minimum quick fill calibration time limit exceeded

Issue description

During the transmission calibration process, the controller was unable to successfully calibrate the "quick fill" parameters for the forward clutch solenoid within the allowed time limit.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Farmall

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the transmission hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and has reached the proper operating temperature (greater than 60°C / 140°F) before attempting calibration.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the forward clutch solenoid for chafed wires, corrosion, loose pins at the connector, continuity, and shorts to ground or power.

  3. Measure the resistance (Ohms) of the forward clutch solenoid coil to ensure it is within OEM specifications, and check the amp draw and voltage supply during operation.

  4. Perform a hydraulic pressure test at the forward clutch test port to determine if the solenoid is physically opening or if there is a massive internal leak in the clutch pack.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Wiring Faults

If the diagnostic checks reveal a wiring issue, repair the harness or replace the damaged electrical connector at the solenoid.

  2. Replace the Solenoid

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid fails the resistance/amp draw test or is mechanically stuck, drain the necessary hydraulic fluid, remove the faulty forward clutch solenoid from the transmission control valve block, and install a new one.

  3. Clear Fault Codes

Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's instrument cluster diagnostic menu (depending on the model year) to clear the stored 741-18 fault code from the DEC memory.

  4. Re-run Calibration

Warm the tractor up until the transmission fluid is above 60°C (140°F). Initiate the transmission calibration routine again. The DEC must successfully complete the quick fill calibration for the forward clutch to restore full operation.
