Case IH 76 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Transmission Controller: No Shaft 3 speed sensor fault

The control module has lost the signal from the 3rd shaft speed sensor. The controller cannot verify the shaft's speed, often assuming the transmission is slipping, which typically results in the transmission shifting to neutral, locking out higher gears, or failing to change gears while driving.

   Access the transmission menu through the tractor's A-post display and monitor live RPMs for Shaft 3 while driving; look for 0 RPM or highly erratic jumps.

   Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector for the Shaft 3 speed sensor (located on the left, lower side of the transmission housing) for breaks, rubbing, or rodent damage.

   Check for related companion codes, such as 2379 or codes indicating clutch slippage.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Chock the wheels or tracks.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the Shaft 3 speed sensor on the transmission housing (typically the lower left side on large articulated models).

   Disconnect the Harness

   Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the speed sensor.

   Remove the Sensor

   Remove the retaining fastener (often an M6 bolt) securing the sensor to the transmission housing. Pull the sensor straight out.

   Inspect for Debris

   Check the magnetic tip of the old sensor. A small amount of fine metallic fuzz is normal, but large metal shavings indicate internal clutch or bearing failure that requires a transmission teardown.

   Install the New Sensor

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM specifications (generally around 8 ± 2 Nm for M6 sensor fasteners).

   Reconnect and Clear

   Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the key on, access the A-post menu or use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes.

   Test Drive

   Operate the tractor and monitor the A-post transmission menu to verify that Shaft 3 is now registering a steady RPM.
