Case IH 76 – Transmission ECM / Rear PTO Controller (CCH): ECM TRIPLICATE READ ERROR IN THE NON-VOLATILE MEMORY (NVM)

Issue description

Impossible to recall any data from the NVM because all three stored copies are different, indicating a damaged EEPROM micro-chip or a faulty ECM. Note: Remote PTO switch faults (such as a switch being stuck or sending conflicting signals) are actually logged under 5000-series codes.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Maxxum
  • TN Series
  • 7200 Series
  • MX Series Magnum
  • MX210
  • MX230
  • MX255
  • MX285
  • Magnum
  • Puma
  • MX
  • MXM
  • Maxxum

Check the cause

  1. For Code 76 (ECM Memory Error): Note that there is no H Menu for diagnostic checks; the transmission is automatically modified and the ECM resets to default settings.

  2. For Remote PTO Switch Symptoms (5000-series codes): Inspect the remote PTO switch located on the rear fender/wing for physical damage, dirt ingress, or sticking buttons.

  3. For Remote PTO Switch Symptoms: Check the 3-pin electrical connector at the switch for corrosion or water intrusion.

  4. For Remote PTO Switch Symptoms: Test the switch for continuity. If the switch is internally shorted (sending an ON and OFF signal simultaneously), it will fail the continuity test and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Replace Transmission ECM

For Code 76: Because the EEPROM micro-chip is damaged, the primary repair is to replace the faulty Transmission ECM.

  2. Disconnect battery

For the Remote PTO Switch: Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental PTO engagement.

  3. Locate switch

Locate the remote PTO switch on the rear fender/wing.

  4. Unplug connector

Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector (Part # 291719A1) from the back of the switch.

  5. Remove switch

Remove the retaining clips or screws holding the switch to the fender housing.

  6. Install new switch

Install the new OEM remote PTO switch and secure it.

  7. Reconnect connector

Reconnect the 3-pin connector, ensuring the weather seal is intact.

  8. Verify operation

Reconnect the battery, power up the tractor, and verify that the PTO 5000-series codes have cleared and the PTO operates correctly from both the cab and the remote location.
