Case IH 77 – Transmission Controller (Transmission ECM): No signal from wheel speed sensor

Issue description

The controller detects that the signal from the output shaft wheel speed sensor is either too weak or completely non-existent. When this code is active, the tractor may fail to display ground speed on the A-post monitor and can experience transmission limitations (such as failing to shift into higher gears or disabling the transmission critically).

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH STX Steiger Series
  • Case IH MX Magnum Series
  • Case IH MX Series
  • Case IH MXM Series
  • Case IH MXU Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness specifically between the output shaft wheel speed sensor and the transmission controller for breaks, chafing, or shorts.

  2. Inspect the sensor connector pins for physical damage, moisture, or heavy dust corrosion.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and measure the resistance across the pins at room temperature (a healthy sensor typically reads around 450 Ohms +/- 20 Ohms).

  4. Ensure the sensor is properly seated and adjusted to the correct depth in the housing.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Wiring Issues

If the diagnostic checks reveal a wiring harness problem between the sensor and the transmission controller, repair or replace the damaged wiring/connectors.

  2. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring is intact but the signal is still missing or weak, remove the faulty output shaft wheel speed sensor and install the replacement part.

  3. Clear the Fault

Use the electronic display (navigate to INFO > FAULTS) or a diagnostic Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault code.

  4. Cycle the Transmission

To restore full function, shift the tractor into forward or cycle the shuttle lever. Reverse will typically become available 10 seconds after the last time the shuttle lever was in forward without the inching pedal down.
