Case IH 78 – Transmission ECM: V8_VREF_FAILED_LOW (5 Fixed Crit.Dis)

Internal ECM Supply Voltage (8V) is too low. The system triggers this fault when it detects that the voltage at ECM connector 2, pin 35 has dropped below 8 volts. This almost always points to an internal printed circuit board error within the module itself.

   Acknowledge that there is no H Menu for diagnostic check for this specific internal error.

   Inspect the wiring harness at ECM connector 2, pin 35 to verify it is not shorted to an external ground or a 5-volt source.

   Verify if the issue is an internal short to ground inside the ECM (confirmed if harness wiring is intact and no external short is found).

   Temporary Recovery

   Cycle the Ignition Switch (shutting off the tractor and turning it back on) to temporarily re-enable the transmission to move the machine to a shop.

   Safety First

   Disconnect the tractor's battery before performing any electrical servicing.

   Harness Inspection

   Locate the Transmission ECM. Disconnect Connector 2 and inspect pin 35 for corrosion, bent pins, or wire chafing that could cause a short to ground.

   Replace the ECM

   If the wiring is clear, the ECM is faulty due to an internal printed circuit board failure and must be replaced.

   Clear Codes

   After replacing the ECM or resolving a wiring short, manually clear the error using the CDU (Control Display Unit) or the EST (Electronic Service Tool) via the HF Menu.
