Case IH 79 – ARM (Armrest Controller): Invalid Configuration - HITCH LOAD command potentiometer is failed

Issue description

The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the hitch load command potentiometer (the dial used to set the draft control load) that is outside of the normal operating range, or the controller is configured to operate with draft control, but the potentiometer is either missing, disconnected, or has completely failed.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX Magnum Series
  • TG Series
  • MX Series
  • CX Series
  • Puma

Check the cause

  1. Verify armrest configuration in the calibration menu (select 'No Draft' to temporarily bypass if needed).

  2. Check potentiometer range in the armrest calibration menu under 'Draft' (an asterisk indicates a valid voltage range).

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connector inside the armrest console for loose pins, chafed wires, or corrosion.

  4. Test the potentiometer with a multimeter for a smooth resistance/voltage sweep, checking for dead spots or an open circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Armrest Internals

Remove the retaining screws on the underside or perimeter of the armrest control console to lift the top cover plate.

  3. Remove the Failed Potentiometer

Locate the hitch load command potentiometer (draft control dial). Disconnect its electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut (typically a 3/8-32 nut) securing the potentiometer to the console panel and pull the switch out.

  4. Install the New Part

Insert the new potentiometer into the panel, align the indexing tab, and tighten the retaining nut. Reattach the control knob to the top of the shaft.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector into the new potentiometer. Reassemble the armrest console and reconnect the tractor's battery.

  6. Calibrate the Armrest

Turn the key on and enter the armrest calibration mode. Select 'Draft'. Verify that the asterisk (*) appears on the display, confirming the new potentiometer is in a valid range. Press the 'PROG' key to record the new voltage and complete the calibration.
