Case IH 79 – TRANS (Transmission Controller): Engine RPM from the alternator is measured too high

Issue description

The transmission controller monitors the engine speed using a frequency signal generated by the alternator's 'W' terminal (or 'R' terminal on some Delco units). If the transmission controller detects that the engine speed signal exceeds 3,000 RPM, it will log this fault code. This can be caused by a genuine mechanical over-speed event, a slipping alternator belt, a faulty wiring connection, or an internal failure of the alternator's rectifier/diode bridge sending an erratic or spiked frequency signal.

Check the cause

  1. Rule out operator/mechanical over-speed: Determine if the tractor was recently in a genuine over-speed condition (e.g., running downhill with a heavy implement load). Check if TRANS 80 is also recorded.

  2. Check the Instrumentation Display (ICU): Drive at different throttle positions and watch the engine RPM on the dash for erratic spikes, dropouts, or abnormally high readings.

  3. Inspect the alternator belt and pulley for looseness or slipping, which can cause erratic alternator speeds.

  4. Inspect the wiring from the alternator 'W' (or 'R') terminal to the transmission controller for loose connections, corrosion, or chafing that could cause a short to voltage.

  5. Verify the installed alternator is the correct specified model, as an incorrect aftermarket alternator with a different pole count will output an incorrect RPM frequency.

Repair steps

  1. Clear the Code

    If the tractor was simply run downhill with a heavy load, clear the code and test drive the machine under normal conditions to see if it returns.

  2. Service the Belt

    If the alternator belt is glazed, cracked, or loose, replace the belt and verify proper tension using the belt tensioner.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the tachometer signal wire at the W/R terminal is loose or damaged, cut back the damaged section, crimp on a new ring terminal or pigtail, and secure it tightly to the alternator stud.

  4. Replace the Alternator

    If the belt is tight, the wiring is intact, and the tractor was not mechanically over-sped, the alternator's internal tachometer signal circuit has failed. Disconnect the batteries, remove the serpentine/V-belt, disconnect the alternator wiring harness, and unbolt the alternator. Install a new OEM-spec alternator, reconnect the wiring, tension the belt, and test the RPM readout on the dash.
