Case IH 80 – Transmission Controller (TRANS) or Instrumentation Controller (ICU / Inst Controller): The Transmission output RPM speed, sourced from the sensor, measured by the controller is too high for the desired gear.
Issue description
The controller is receiving an erratic, intermittent, or excessively high frequency signal from the transmission output speed sensor (sometimes referred to as the wheel speed sensor) that does not mathematically align with the currently engaged gear and engine RPM. This condition typically points to a faulty sensor, a wiring harness short, or in some cases, mechanical clutch slippage.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying Code 81 (Transmission clutches are slipping). If present, the issue may be mechanical clutch failure rather than a sensor fault.
Inspect the wiring harness from the transmission speed sensor to the controller for physical damage, corrosion, or moisture.
Disconnect the sensor connector. With the key switch in the ON position, measure the voltage at the harness connector (typically cavity A) to verify a 5V reference voltage.
If the 5V reference is missing, test the wiring harness for an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to power.
Measure the resistance from the ground cavity of the connector to the chassis ground to ensure a solid ground connection.
If the wiring is intact and voltages are correct, verify the function of the instrumentation/transmission controller.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the transmission output speed sensor on the transmission housing or rear axle housing.
Disconnect Wiring
Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the sensor. Clean any dirt or debris from the area to prevent contamination of the transmission fluid.
Remove the Sensor
Unbolt and remove the faulty transmission speed sensor from the housing.
Install the New Sensor
Insert the new OEM transmission speed sensor. Secure it with the mounting hardware to the specified torque.
Reconnect and Secure
Reconnect the electrical harness. Ensure the connector clicks into place and the wiring is secured away from moving parts or extreme heat sources.
Clear Codes and Test
Turn the key ON, clear the stored fault codes using the diagnostic interface or monitor, and test drive the tractor to verify that ground speed displays correctly and the transmission shifts normally without throwing Code 80.
