8002

Case IH 8002 – HITCH: Battery Voltage is too High

Issue description

System voltage measured by the machine's controllers has exceeded the normal operating threshold (typically over 15 volts), indicating an overcharging condition in the electrical system.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH MX Magnum Series (MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285)
  • Case IH STX / Steiger Series
  • Case IH Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Test alternator output voltage at the battery and the alternator output terminal while the engine is running (readings above 14.5V - 15V indicate overcharging)

  2. Check for concurrent fault codes AUX 8012 and STEER 8012, which confirm a global high battery voltage condition

  3. Monitor live voltage using the instrumentation display or service tool MONITOR window by selecting ARMREST BATTERY VOLTAGE or TRANS BATTERY VOLTAGE

  4. Inspect wiring for any crossed wires at the alternator or a short to an external power source

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Alternator

If the live voltage testing confirms an overcharge condition, the internal voltage regulator inside the alternator has likely failed.

  2. Replace the Component

Depending on the exact alternator model, you can either replace the internal voltage regulator or replace the entire alternator assembly (which is the standard repair for modern MX/TG series).

  3. Inspect the Battery

Test the battery and clean the battery cables. Replace the battery if it has been damaged by the high voltage.

  4. Clear Codes

Reconnect power, start the tractor, verify the voltage is now regulating at a steady ~13.5V to 14.2V, and clear the stored fault codes from the HITCH and TRANS controllers.
