Case IH 8043 - UCM – UCM: Front PTO fender switch is "stuck on"

The system's controller is detecting a continuous closed circuit from the remote fender switch. This underlying condition usually means: The momentary contact switch on the fender is physically stuck in the closed/ON position (often due to dirt, debris, or mechanical failure); There is an electrical short to B+ (12 volts) in the switch wiring; There is a short circuit directly across the fender switch wires.

   Inspect the Front PTO fender switch for physical damage, packed dirt, or ice that might be holding the button in the depressed position.

   Using a continuity tester and a voltmeter, test the switch to see if it is internally shorted.

   Check the wiring harness for a short to 12 volts or a short across the two switch wires. Verify that the 12V supply voltage is correct and that no related fuses are blown.

   With the tractor turned off, unplug the UCM connector (e.g., connector 92, pins 13 & 22) and inspect it for water, dirt, or corrosion that could be bridging the pins and causing a false 'stuck on' signal.

   Power down tractor

   Ensure the engine is off and the PTO is fully disengaged. Disconnect the battery or ensure the key is off before unplugging the UCM to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the switch

   Locate the Front PTO switch on the front linkage/fender area. Remove the retaining clips or mounting bracket holding the switch in place.

   Disconnect and isolate

   Unplug the switch from the main wiring harness.

   Test the circuit

   With the switch unplugged, turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and check if the fault code changes from 'stuck on' to 'open circuit' (e.g., code 158 or 8008). If the code changes, the switch is the culprit. If the 'stuck on' code persists, the wiring harness is shorted to 12V between the switch and the UCM.

   Replace or repair

   If the switch is faulty, install a new OEM Front PTO fender switch. If the harness is shorted, trace the wires back to the UCM, locate the chafe/pinch point, and repair the wiring.

   Reassemble and clear codes

   Reconnect the switch and the UCM. Start the tractor and use the diagnostic display to clear the pending/confirmed fault codes. Test the Front PTO operation from both the cab and the fender to verify the repair.
