Case IH 82 – TMF (Transmission Management Function / Transmission Controller): Differential Lock Solenoid Open or Short Circuit

The system's controller has commanded the differential lock solenoid high-side driver to turn on, but no current was sensed (open circuit), or abnormal resistance/voltage was detected (short circuit).

   Verify that the differential lock switch in the cab is functioning and sending power.

   Disconnect the harness from the differential lock solenoid and test the resistance across the pins with a multimeter (should be ~8 ohms). O.L. or very low resistance indicates a bad coil.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the TMF controller and the solenoid for broken wires (open circuit) or rubbed insulation causing a short to ground or power.

   Attach a test harness to the differential lock solenoid connector, actuate the switch in the cab, and drive the tractor to verify if the TMF controller is successfully outputting voltage.

   Preparation

   Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the differential lock solenoid. Depending on the model, it is typically mounted on the transmission valve block or the rear axle housing.

   Disconnect Harness

   Unplug the 2-terminal electrical connector from the solenoid.

   Remove the Solenoid

   Clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid cartridge in place. Pull the old solenoid off the valve stem. (If removing the entire cartridge valve, cap the port to minimize fluid loss).

   Install the New Solenoid

   Slide the new solenoid coil over the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut/hardware.

   Reconnect

   Plug the 2-terminal harness back into the new solenoid.

   Test

   Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, clear the TMF 82 fault code from the system, and test the differential lock engagement to ensure the code does not return.
