Case IH 83 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) Controller: Brake Lamp Relay Solenoid is failed Open or Short Circuit

The controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit responsible for energizing the brake lamp relay. The system is seeing either an "open circuit" (such as a broken wire, disconnected harness, or a burnt-out relay coil) or a "short circuit" (a wire rubbing against the chassis ground or shorted to another power source).

   Inspect the brake lamp relay (K-008) in the cab's fuse/relay panel for obvious signs of heat damage, melting, or a burnt smell.

   Test the circuit using a multimeter to check the wiring from the TMF controller to the relay socket for continuity (to rule out an open circuit) and continuity to ground (to rule out a short circuit).

   Inspect the harness connectors between the controller and the relay panel for damaged, bent, corroded, or dislocated pins.

   Verify the brake light switch is receiving and transmitting proper voltage (12 volts) when the brake pedal is depressed.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, apply the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental shorts while testing.

   Relay Swap Test

   Access the fuse and relay panel. Locate the brake light relay (K-008). Swap it with a known-good relay of the exact same specification (12V, 20A, Micro relay) from a non-critical circuit (like a work lamp).

   Verify

   Reconnect the battery and turn the key on. If the TMF 83 code clears and the brake lights function normally, the relay was the point of failure. Replace the relay permanently.

   Wiring Repair

   If the code persists, trace the wiring harness from the relay block back to the TMF controller. Locate the break or short (often found where harnesses rub against the cab frame or near connectors) and splice/repair the damaged wire using weather-sealed connectors.

   Switch Replacement

   If the circuit is intact but the brake switch itself is internally shorted, remove the switch from the pedal assembly/console, unplug the harness, and install a new OEM switch.

   Clear Codes

   Once repaired, the active fault code should clear. If it is stored as a permanent code, you may need to clear it using a diagnostic tool or by completing a few operating cycles.
