Case IH 87 – Instrumentation Controller (ICU): Ground Speed Signal is failed in the Instrumentation Controller.

Issue description

The CAN Data Bus has signaled that the ground speed sensor (typically the transmission wheel speed sensor or radar sensor) has failed, and the controller is no longer receiving a valid speed signal.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wheel/transmission speed sensor harness for open circuits, shorts to ground, or corrosion at the connector (Cavity A is Signal, Cavity B is Ground).

  2. Verify that the tractor model configuration is correct in the instrumentation controller using a service tool (ensure 'ST MODEL' is set to the correct model number).

  3. If the machine is equipped with a factory radar speed sensor, verify if the slip sensor (radar) has failed, as the system defaults to the transmission speed sensor in certain conditions.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

Locate the transmission output speed sensor on the transmission housing or the radar speed sensor mounted under the cab/chassis.

  2. Remove the Faulty Sensor

Remove the mounting bracket, guard, bolts, nuts, and washers securing the sensor. Disconnect the wiring harness.

  3. Install the Replacement

Mount the new transmission speed sensor or radar sensor. Secure the wiring harness with cable ties to prevent chafing.

  4. Clear the Fault

Once the physical repair is complete, turn the key on. Depress the 'Reset' button on the programmable display to clear the fault from the instrumentation controller.

  5. Test Operation

Test drive the machine to verify that the ground speed readout on the A-post display is functioning correctly and that the 3-second continuous audible alarm does not return.
