Case IH 89 – Armrest Controller: Aux 1st remote valve FLOW potentiometer is failed

Issue description

A malfunction in the rotary potentiometer located on the armrest that controls the hydraulic flow rate for the #1 auxiliary remote valve. This usually means the potentiometer has an internal electrical fault (such as a worn carbon track causing a 'dead spot', an open circuit, or a short), preventing the controller from accurately reading the operator's desired flow setting.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Magnum Series (e.g., MX215, 225, 305, 310)
  • Steiger / STX 4WD Series (e.g., STX380, STX430, STX450, STX500, Steiger 335, 380, 535)
  • Puma Series (e.g., Puma 125)
  • MX / TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Monitor the Output: Access the tractor's armrest diagnostic screen or hydraulic flow display. Turn the 1st remote flow dial and watch the percentage for erratic jumps or drops to 0%.

  2. Inspect Wiring: Lift the armrest console cover and inspect the wiring harness and connector going to the 1st remote flow potentiometer for pinched wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  3. Swap Test: Temporarily swap the electrical connector from the 1st remote potentiometer with the 2nd remote potentiometer. If the fault code changes to Code 99, the potentiometer is faulty. If Code 89 persists, the issue is in the wiring or armrest board.

  4. System Reset: Disconnect the tractor's battery for a short period to reset the electronic control systems and rule out a transient voltage glitch.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the armrest.

  2. Access the Control Panel

Remove the upper housing/cover of the armrest console to expose the secondary control panel where the flow control and timer knobs are mounted.

  3. Remove the Knob

Pull off the flow control knob (OEM Part # 276797A1) from the top of the failed 1st remote potentiometer.

  4. Disconnect and Remove

Unplug the electrical quick-connect adapter from the bottom of the potentiometer. Remove the retaining nut (typically a 3/8-32 nut, Part # A39888) securing the potentiometer to the panel.

  5. Install the New Part

Insert the new 1000 Ohm potentiometer through the panel, secure it with the retaining nut, and press the control knob back onto the shaft.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the new potentiometer. Reassemble the armrest console housing and reconnect the tractor battery.

  7. Calibrate

Turn the key on and use the tractor's display monitor to perform an SCV (Selective Control Valve) / Armrest calibration. This ensures the Armrest Controller learns the exact minimum and maximum resistance values of the new potentiometer.
