Case IH 9002 – Hitch/MFD/Differential Lock Controller: Front hitch position sensor - open circuit / short circuit to 0 Volt
Issue description
The control module is receiving a 0-volt signal from the front hitch position potentiometer. This happens when the signal wire is physically broken/disconnected (open circuit) or the signal wire is chafed and touching the tractor's chassis/ground (short circuit to 0V).

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running from the front hitch position sensor to the Hitch Controller for pinched wires, chafing against the front axle/frame, or corrosion in the connector pins.
Disconnect the sensor and turn the key ON to check the harness side for proper reference voltage and a good ground.
With the battery disconnected, use a multimeter to check the signal wire from the sensor connector back to the controller for continuity to rule out an open circuit.
Test the signal wire against the tractor frame for continuity to rule out a short to ground (0V).
If the wiring harness passes all tests, test the internal potentiometer of the sensor for an internal open or short.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Harness Repair
If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken or shorted wire, splice and heat-shrink the damaged section of the harness, or replace the harness pigtail.
Sensor Replacement
If the wiring is intact, unplug the factory connector from the front hitch position sensor. Unbolt the sensor bracket/housing from the front hitch assembly and remove the faulty potentiometer.
Installation
Install the new position sensor, ensuring the mechanical linkage is properly aligned with the hitch movement. Secure the mounting bolts and plug in the connector.
Mandatory Calibration
Reconnect the battery and power on the tractor. You must calibrate the new sensor via the H Menu / Hitch Calibration menu so the controller learns the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage limits, otherwise fault code 9006 will occur.
