Case IH 9017 - UCM – UCM: External fender switch short to Vbat

The control module has detected that the signal circuit for the external fender switch (typically used for remote PTO, front hitch, or rear 3-point hitch operation) is shorted to battery voltage (Vbat). This means the circuit is continuously receiving 12 volts, which usually indicates a wiring harness chafe exposing the wire to a power source, or an internal short circuit within the switch itself.

   Identify which external fender switch is throwing the code (Rear PTO, Rear Hitch Up/Down, or Front Hitch)

   Inspect the switch for physical damage, cracked rubber boots, or water intrusion, which commonly causes internal shorting

   Perform a disconnect test: Disconnect the electrical connector from the fender switch, turn the key ON, and check active fault codes. If the code changes to 9018 (Unexpected value / Open circuit), the short is internal to the switch. If code 9017 remains active, the short is in the tractor's wiring harness

   Trace the wiring harness from the fender switch back to the UCM. Look for pinched, chafed, or melted wires, paying special attention to areas where the harness routes along inner fender panels, cab mounts, or the frame

   With the switch disconnected and the key ON, use a multimeter to probe the signal wire on the harness side. If it reads 12V, the wire is shorted to power somewhere in the loom

   Disconnect battery

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

   Replace faulty switch (if applicable)

   If the switch is faulty: Squeeze the retaining tabs or remove the mounting screws on the fender panel to pop the old switch out. Plug the new OEM switch into the harness and snap it back into the fender housing.

   Repair faulty wiring harness (if applicable)

   If the wiring harness is faulty: Open the wire loom at the site of the short. Cut out the melted or chafed section of the wire. Splice in a new section of wire using weatherproof heat-shrink butt connectors.

   Secure the harness

   Wrap the repaired harness in protective conduit and secure it away from pinch points using OEM routing clips (e.g., part # 47505757).

   Reconnect battery

   Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition ON.

   Clear fault codes

   Clear the stored fault codes from the UCM.

   Test operation

   Test the fender switch operation (e.g., raise/lower the hitch or engage the PTO) to verify the repair is successful and the code does not return.
