Case IH 9035 - UCM – UCM: Front hitch lowering speed potentiometer open circuit / short circuit to ground

This fault code indicates an electrical failure in the circuit for the front hitch lowering speed potentiometer. The control module is detecting a signal voltage that is out of the expected operating range—either too low (indicating a short circuit to ground) or completely lost (indicating an open circuit or disconnected sensor). When this occurs, the system cannot determine the operator's requested drop rate for the front hitch, which may cause the hitch to default to a safe, restricted mode or disable the lowering function entirely.

   Inspect the wiring harness and the plug-in connector at the lowering speed potentiometer (located on the armrest/console) for loose pins, corrosion, or physical damage.

   Use a multimeter to check the signal wire between the potentiometer and the UCM for continuity (to rule out an open circuit) and check for continuity to ground (to rule out a short to ground).

   Verify that the potentiometer is receiving its stable 5V reference voltage and has a good ground connection from the control module.

   Measure the resistance sweep of the potentiometer itself while turning the dial. If the resistance drops out, spikes to infinity (open), or reads 0 ohms (shorted internally), the potentiometer has failed.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Component

   Remove the trim panels or cover on the Multicontroller armrest / side console to access the underside of the hitch control panel.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty lowering speed potentiometer. Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws securing the potentiometer to the console housing, and pull the switch out.

   Installation

   Insert the new potentiometer into the console, secure it with the retaining hardware, and plug in the electrical connector.

   Reassembly

   Reinstall the armrest/console trim panels and reconnect the battery.

   Calibration

   Turn the key on and use the tractor's display monitor to perform a hitch calibration. This ensures the UCM learns the minimum and maximum voltage values of the new potentiometer.
