Case IH 9036 - UCM – UCM: Front hitch upper end position potentiometer short circuit to 12V
Issue description
The control module is receiving a signal voltage from the front hitch position sensor (potentiometer) that is excessively high (equal to battery voltage). This typically happens when the sensor's signal wire is shorted directly to a 12V power source, or the sensor has failed internally. Because the controller cannot determine the actual position or upper limit of the front hitch, it will disable front hitch operation to prevent mechanical damage.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the front hitch rockshaft/lift arm to the UCM for pinched wires, chafing against the frame, or melted insulation exposing the signal wire to 12V.
Perform a harness isolation test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the front hitch potentiometer, turn the key ON, and measure voltage on the signal wire pin. If it reads 12V, the short is in the wiring harness.
Test the sensor internally: If the harness tests fine (showing a standard 5V reference and a good ground, with no 12V on the signal line), the short circuit is internal to the potentiometer itself.
Ensure no external power supplies or aftermarket accessories have been improperly spliced into the front hitch harness, backfeeding 12V into the sensor circuit.
Repair steps
Safety First
Lower the front hitch to the ground (if possible) to relieve hydraulic pressure. Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the front hitch position potentiometer, which is typically mounted on the pivot point of the front hitch rockshaft or lift arm assembly.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If your diagnostic checks revealed a harness short, trace the wire back to the UCM. Cut out the damaged section of the wire and splice in a new section using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors.
Sensor Replacement (If Applicable)
Disconnect the sensor's plug-and-play connector. Remove the retaining bolts/screws holding the potentiometer to the hitch frame. Install the new potentiometer, ensuring the mechanical linkage or rotary tang aligns correctly with the hitch pivot. Tighten the mounting hardware and reconnect the electrical plug.
Reassembly and Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Because a new position sensor will have slightly different voltage outputs than the old one, you must perform a front hitch calibration procedure using the tractor's AFS Pro display or the dealer diagnostic tool. Failure to calibrate will result in a secondary code (e.g., 9006 - Front hitch position potentiometer not calibrated).
