9070 - UCM

Case IH 9070 - UCM – UCM: Front hitch single/double acting solenoid 2 - open circuit / short circuit to 0V

Issue description

The control module is detecting that the electrical circuit to the front hitch single/double acting solenoid 2 is either completely broken (open circuit, infinite resistance) or the signal wire is shorted directly to ground (0 Volts). Because of the electrical fault, the solenoid cannot be energized, and the front hitch will likely fail to operate or calibrate.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225, 240 CVX)
  • Magnum series (180 through 380)
  • Maxxum series
  • Steiger series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wire harness leading to the front hitch valve block for visible damage, rubbing, or disconnected plugs

  2. Turn the ignition ON and command the hitch, then check for 12 volts at the solenoid connector

  3. Disconnect the harness from the UCM and the solenoid, and check the continuity of the signal circuit between the UCM pin and the solenoid connector pin to verify if the wire is broken (open)

  4. Measure the resistance between the solenoid signal wire and chassis ground to check if the wire is shorted to 0V

  5. Measure the internal resistance of Solenoid 2's coil to see if the coil is internally broken (open) or melted (shorted)

Repair steps

  1. Turn the tractor ignition OFF and disconnect the battery

Turn the tractor ignition OFF and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the front hitch electro-hydraulic control valve block

Locate the front hitch electro-hydraulic control valve block at the front of the tractor.

  3. Identify Solenoid 2 and disconnect its electrical harness

Identify Solenoid 2 on the valve block and disconnect its electrical harness.

  4. Inspect the connector

Inspect the connector for water intrusion, bent pins, or corrosion. Clean and apply dielectric grease if necessary.

  5. Replace the solenoid coil if internally open or shorted

If the diagnostic checks proved the solenoid coil is internally open or shorted, remove the retaining nut/bolt, slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem, and install the replacement coil.

  6. Repair the wiring harness if broken or chafed

If the solenoid tested good but the wiring failed the continuity/short tests, trace the harness back to the UCM and repair the broken or chafed section of the wire.

  7. Reconnect the harness and battery

Reconnect the harness, reconnect the battery, and turn the ignition ON.

  8. Clear fault codes and test

Clear the fault codes from the UCM via the display monitor or EST service tool, and test the front hitch for proper operation.
