Case IH 9071 - UCM – UCM: Front hitch single/double acting solenoid 2 short circuit to 12V

Issue description

The control module has detected an unexpectedly high voltage (battery voltage/12V) on the circuit controlling the #2 solenoid for the front hitch. This condition typically means the signal or ground wire for the solenoid has shorted directly to a 12V power source, the solenoid coil itself has failed internally, or the module's internal driver has shorted.

Check the cause

  1. Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness between the UCM and the front hitch control valve block. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points where the solenoid control wire might be touching a 12V power supply wire.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the harness at the front hitch solenoid 2. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals that could bridge the circuit to power.

  3. Voltage Test: With the solenoid disconnected and the tractor key ON, use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the solenoid signal wire. If it reads 12V, the short to power is located within the wiring harness.

  4. Coil Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the pins of the disconnected solenoid coil. If the resistance is out of specification (near zero ohms), the coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  5. UCM Verification: If the wiring harness and solenoid both test good, the UCM itself may have an internal hardware failure (shorted driver) and should be tested by a dealer.
