Case IH 9158 – UCM: H Pattern Indicator Shorted To Ground

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical circuit providing power to the H-Pattern indicator light is shorting out to the chassis ground.

Visually inspect the ISO/H pattern selector switch on the instrument panel for physical damage, moisture intrusion, or a collapsed rocker switch.
Trace the wiring harness from the back of the pattern switch/instrument cluster down to the UCM. Look for pinch points, rubbed-through wire insulation, or areas where the harness may be chafing against the metal cab frame.
Disconnect the switch and use a digital multimeter to check the indicator circuit wire for continuity to ground.
Test the switch itself for an internal short to ground when toggled into the H-Pattern position.

Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Access the Switch Panel
Remove the retaining screws for the right-hand instrument/switch panel where the ISO/H pattern switch is located.
Isolate the Short
Unplug the connector from the back of the pattern switch.
Test and Replace
If the multimeter shows the short to ground is inside the switch, the switch has failed internally. Remove the switch from the panel bezel and snap a new one into place. If the short is in the wiring harness, trace the wire back to the UCM. Locate the chafed wire, cut out the damaged section, solder in a new piece of wire, and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink.
Reassembly
Plug the harness back into the switch and reinstall the instrument panel.
Clear and Verify
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position (without starting the engine) and toggle the pattern switch to "H". Verify that the H-Pattern indicator illuminates correctly and that the 9158 code moves to an inactive state or clears entirely.

May require replacement if the internal board is shorted on models where the indicator is integrated directly into the sealed instrument cluster board.

Electrical repair wire and heat-shrink tubing
