Case IH 9160 – UCM (Universal Control Module): H Pattern Indicator Shorted To Power

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical circuit providing power or ground to the "H" pattern indicator lamp is receiving unintended voltage (a short circuit to a 12V power source).

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SR130
  • SR150
  • SR175
  • SV185
  • SR200
  • SR220
  • SR250
  • SV250
  • SV300
  • TR270
  • TR320
  • TV380
  • L220

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running between the UCM, the ISO/H Pattern Switch, and the Instrument Cluster for pinched wires, chafed insulation, or melted areas where the indicator wire might be touching a 12V power supply wire.

  2. Disconnect the Instrument Cluster and the Pattern Switch. Use a digital multimeter to check the H-Pattern indicator circuit wire in the harness for voltage. If voltage is present with the components unplugged, the short is in the wiring harness.

  3. Inspect the UCM and Instrument Cluster connector pins for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging circuits.

  4. If the harness tests good (no short to power), the short is likely internal to the Instrument Cluster's printed circuit board or the switch panel itself.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Access the Components

Remove the interior cab trim panels necessary to access the rear of the Instrument Cluster and the UCM (typically located in the cab pillars/headliner).

  3. Repair the Harness

If your diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, locate the damaged section. Cut out the damaged wire, splice in a new section using weather-resistant heat-shrink butt connectors, and re-wrap the harness in protective loom.

  4. Replace the Cluster/Switch

If the short is internal to the cluster or switch panel, unbolt the faulty unit, disconnect the wiring pigtail, and install the replacement part. (Note: If replacing the main Instrument Cluster, it must be programmed to the machine by an authorized dealer using the electronic service tool).

  5. Reassemble and Test

Reconnect the battery. Power on the machine and use the electronic display to clear the inactive fault codes.

  6. Verify Operation

Press the Pattern Switch to toggle between ISO and H patterns. Verify that the H-Pattern indicator illuminates correctly and that fault code 9160 does not return.
