Case IH 93 – TMF (Transmission Management Function / Transmission Controller): MFD Switch is failed in the Armrest Controller
Issue description
The system has detected an electrical failure, illogical state, or loss of communication specifically tied to the Mechanical Front Drive (MFD / 4WD) switch, which is hardwired directly into the armrest controller.
Applies to these machines
12 machines- Magnum
- Case IH MX Magnum Series
- MX180
- MX210
- MX230
- MX255
- MX285
- Case IH Steiger Series
- TG215
- TG245
- TG275
- TG305
Check the cause
Check for Secondary Armrest Codes: Look for Fault Code ARM 1069 ('MFD switch is faulty'). If present, the issue is isolated to the switch or the armrest board itself.
Inspect CAN-BUS Communication: Verify that the Armrest Controller is online and communicating with the TCU. A loss of communication can falsely flag switch failures.
Check Harness Routing: Inspect the wiring harness for rub-throughs or chafing under the cab, as well as bad connector pins at the base of the armrest console.
Rule out Software: A reboot or dealer re-flash may be required if the switch tests perfectly for continuity, as there is a small chance of a software execution error.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent shorting sensitive CAN-BUS components.
Access the Armrest Console
Remove the retaining screws on the right-hand armrest control panel to expose the underside of the switches and the main controller board.
Test the MFD Switch
Disconnect the MFD switch from the armrest harness. Use a multimeter to test for continuity across the switch terminals while toggling it between the ON/OFF/AUTO positions.
Replace the Switch (If Faulty)
If the switch fails the continuity test or shows high resistance, remove it from the bezel and install a replacement OEM switch.
Inspect the Controller Board (If Switch is Good)
If the switch tests fine, the fault lies in the armrest controller board (a known issue on MX series tractors is the failure of the 5V regulator or internal board traces). The board may need to be sent out for remanufacture or replaced entirely.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect all harnesses, restore battery power, and use the tractor's diagnostic display to clear the TMF 93 and ARM 1069 codes. Test the MFD engagement in the field.
