Case IH 9303 – HITCH Controller: Raise Valve current measurement problem during calibration.
Issue description
During the hitch calibration process, the controller detects that the full raise current going to the hitch raise solenoid is out of the acceptable range. The primary failure modes for this condition are either a raise solenoid coil with resistance that is too low (shorted) or a system battery voltage that is excessively high.

Check the cause
Check System Voltage: Test the battery voltage and the alternator output voltage while the machine is running. The voltage must be less than 14.7 volts DC.
Test the Solenoid Coil: Test the hitch raise solenoid coil for a short circuit or abnormally low resistance using a multimeter.
Repair steps
Verify Voltage
Start the tractor and measure the alternator output. If it exceeds 14.7 volts, diagnose and repair the alternator/voltage regulator first.
Locate the Hitch Valve
If voltage is normal, locate the hitch control valve assembly at the rear of the tractor.
Inspect Wiring
Disconnect the electrical harness at the hitch raise solenoid. Inspect the pins and connector for corrosion, melting, or wire chafing that could cause a short to ground or power.
Ohm Test the Solenoid
Measure the resistance across the pins of the raise solenoid coil. If the resistance is out of specification (too low) or shows a dead short, the solenoid coil has failed.
Replace the Solenoid
Remove the retaining nut on the raise solenoid, slide the old coil off the valve cartridge, and install the new replacement solenoid coil.
Re-Calibrate
Clear the stored fault codes from the HITCH controller memory. You must re-run the hitch calibration procedure to ensure the new valve current is measured correctly and the code does not return.
