9308

Case IH 9308 – Hitch Controller: The time allowed for hitch calibration has expired.

Issue description

A timeout error that occurs when the tractor's computer initiates a hitch calibration sequence, but the required operator inputs or sensor feedbacks are not received within the programmed time limit.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX Magnum series
  • TG series
  • STX Steiger series
  • Puma series
  • Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Check for operator error — ensure physical steps (moving levers, pressing buttons) are performed quickly during calibration

  2. Verify operating conditions — tractor must be completely stationary and engine speed set correctly (often above 1600 RPM)

  3. Check for related sensor codes (e.g., 9309, 9310, 1010) that indicate a sensor or switch is failing to send the correct signal

  4. Test the hitch position potentiometer for a dead spot or failed circuit if the system fails to recognize hitch movement

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor for calibration

Start the tractor and ensure the engine is running at the required RPM (often >1600 RPM) and the tractor is parked with the parking brake engaged.

  2. Enter Hitch Calibration mode

Enter the Hitch Calibration mode via the instrument cluster or armrest display.

  3. Follow on-screen prompts

Follow the on-screen prompts promptly. For example, when the display reads 'H Pos Dn', immediately move the hitch position lever to the full down position.

  4. Acknowledge position

Wait for the system to acknowledge the position (an asterisk * often appears on the display when the potentiometer reads a valid range) and press the PROG (Program) or ACK (Acknowledge) key to proceed to the next step.

  5. Complete remaining steps

Complete the upper limit and drop rate steps as prompted before the internal timer runs out.

  6. Inspect wiring and replace potentiometer

If the calibration repeatedly times out because the controller does not recognize the hitch movement, inspect the wiring harness to the rear hitch position potentiometer for breaks or corrosion. If the wiring is intact, replace the hitch position potentiometer.
