Case IH 9311 – HITCH Controller: Hitch position to hitch rockshaft position ratio is not within spec during calibration.
Issue description
During the electronic hitch calibration process, the system compares the physical movement of the rear rockshaft (measured by the rockshaft potentiometer) against the commanded position (measured by the position command potentiometer in the cab). If the ratio between these two ranges falls outside of the programmed specifications, the calibration fails and code 9311 is triggered.

Check the cause
Inspect the Rockshaft Linkage: Check the mechanical linkage and lever connecting the rear rockshaft to the rockshaft potentiometer. Ensure the clamp bolt is tight and the lever has not slipped on the shaft.
Check for Binding: Verify that the rockshaft potentiometer shaft is not binding inside its bushing.
Test the Rockshaft Potentiometer: Using a multimeter, check the resistance across the potentiometer terminals. Across terminals A and C, the reading should typically be between 4000–6000 ohms. Across terminals A and B, the resistance should vary smoothly without dead spots as the hitch is moved from fully down to fully up.
Inspect the Armrest Controls: Verify that the position command potentiometer (the hitch control lever/dial in the armrest) is functioning and was not installed improperly during a previous armrest calibration.
Repair steps
Free up the Linkage
If the rockshaft potentiometer shaft is binding, loosen the clamp bolt on the lever and slip it off the shaft. Remove the enclosure that holds the potentiometer, then disassemble and clean the shaft and bushing. Apply a light lubricant and reassemble.
Replace Faulty Sensors
If the rockshaft potentiometer fails the multimeter resistance test (shows an open circuit, dead spots, or values wildly out of the 4000-6000 ohm spec), remove the sensor hardware and install a new potentiometer.
Check Wiring/Connectors
Inspect the 3-way wiring connector at the rockshaft potentiometer (often a Delphi Metri-Pack or AMP Superseal connector) for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins. Repair the harness if necessary.
Recalibrate the Hitch
Because this code is triggered during calibration (or prevents calibration from finishing), you must perform the Electronic Hitch Control calibration procedure once the mechanical/electrical repair is complete. This allows the Hitch Controller to relearn the upper and lower limits of the new or adjusted potentiometer.
