Case IH 9316 – Hitch Controller: Invalid Config - Both Draft Pin voltages are not within spec for 'no load' condition during calibration.
Issue description
The hitch controller is attempting to calibrate the 3-point hitch, but the voltage signals returning from both the left and right lower draft sensing pins are outside the acceptable baseline parameters. When no implement is attached, the pins should send a specific 'no load' resting voltage back to the controller. If the voltage is out of range, the controller aborts the calibration for safety and logs this code.

Check the cause
Verify 'No Load' State: Ensure there is absolutely no implement attached to the 3-point hitch and that the lower arms are hanging freely without binding.
Configuration Check: Verify that the tractor is actually equipped with draft control pins. If the tractor only has position control but the armrest controller was accidentally configured for draft mode, it will trigger this code.
Wiring and Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to both the left and right draft pins. Look for pinched wires, rubbed insulation, or packed dirt/moisture inside the connectors.
Voltage Test: Disconnect the draft pins and use a multimeter to verify that the controller is sending the proper 8-volt reference signal to the pins.
Resistance Test: Test the resistance across the pins of the draft sensor itself to determine if the internal strain gauge has failed.
Repair steps
Clean connectors and recalibrate
Clean the draft pin electrical connectors with contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and reconnect them. Attempt to run the hitch calibration procedure again.
Diagnose internal failure
If the code persists and the harness has been verified to have good continuity and reference voltage, the draft pins have failed internally.
Replace or bypass draft pins
Choose a repair path based on tractor usage: Path A (Retain Draft Control): Support the lower hitch arms, remove the retaining hardware, and drive out the old draft pins. Install new OEM draft pins and reconnect the harness. Path B (Bypass Draft Control): If the operator only uses the hitch for position control and does not need draft sensing, install a Draft Load Sensing Pin Elimination Kit. Unplug the failed pins, plug the eliminator modules directly into the tractor harness, and secure them with zip ties.
Calibrate Hitch Controller
Regardless of which path you choose, you must perform the Hitch Controller Calibration procedure after the repair to clear Code 9316 and restore hitch functionality.
