Case IH 9321 – Hitch Controller: Hitch calibration attempted when the engine is not running or engine speed signal is failed.
Issue description
The hitch calibration procedure requires the engine to be running to ensure proper hydraulic flow and system pressures. If the controller detects that the calibration sequence has been initiated but it is not receiving a valid engine RPM signal, it will abort the calibration and log this code.

Check the cause
Verify that the engine is actually running when attempting the hitch calibration
Check the instrumentation display on the dash to see if the engine RPM is reading correctly
Evaluate RPM stability; if the engine speed reads zero or is very unstable, the issue lies with the engine speed signal
Check for related active engine or instrumentation fault codes (such as ENG 115, INST 3030, or TRANS 3011) that flag a failed engine speed sensor or loss of speed signal
Repair steps
Operator Error Check
Attempt the hitch calibration again, ensuring the engine is running and the RPM is set to the specified calibration speed (often above 1600 RPM for certain valve calibrations). If it succeeds, no repair is needed.
Troubleshoot the Speed Signal
If the engine is running but the dash shows no RPM (or the code persists), connect a diagnostic tool to monitor the engine speed signal output directly from the Engine Controller.
Inspect the Engine Speed Sensor
Locate the engine speed sensor. Depending on the engine (e.g., 8.3L, 9.0L, or 15.0L), this will be either the Crankshaft Position Sensor or the Camshaft Position Sensor.
Test Wiring and Connectors
Inspect the sensor's wiring harness and connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or physical damage. Test the resistance of the sensor (a healthy inductive speed sensor typically reads around 450 Ohms ± 20 Ohms at ambient temperature, though you should verify against your specific engine's manual).
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails the resistance test or fails to output an alternating voltage when the engine turns, replace the engine speed sensor.
Clear Codes and Recalibrate
After replacing the sensor and verifying that the RPM signal has returned to the instrumentation display, clear the fault codes and restart the hitch calibration procedure.
