9404

Case IH 9404 – IC (Instrument Cluster): Memory Error - Triple Redundant - Hour Meter Failure

Issue description

The internal memory (EEPROM) responsible for storing and tracking the machine's operating hours has become corrupted or has suffered a hardware failure, meaning the hour meter can no longer accurately record, save, or display the machine's usage hours.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • SR130
  • SR150
  • SR175
  • SR200
  • SR220
  • SR250
  • SV185
  • SV250
  • SV300
  • TR270
  • TR320
  • TV380
  • 410
  • 420
  • 430
  • 440
  • 450
  • 465
  • Tractors

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the hour meter display on the dash to verify if it is blank, frozen, or displaying an error message

  2. Check the machine's system voltage for spikes, drops, or a failing alternator, which can cause memory corruption in the cluster's EEPROM

  3. Check for accompanying CAN-Bus communication fault codes (such as 9405 or 9406) which indicate a loss of CAN communication from the UCM and point to a wiring harness issue rather than a failed cluster

  4. Inspect the cluster housing for signs of moisture intrusion or physical damage

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Cluster

Locate the Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC). On Case IH skid steers, this is typically mounted on the right-hand cab post.

  3. Remove Trim

Remove the mounting screws and the plastic trim panel securing the cluster to the cab post.

  4. Disconnect Harness

Carefully unplug the wiring harness (often a 10-pin connector) from the back of the cluster.

  5. Install New Unit

Plug the harness into the replacement instrument cluster and seat it into the mounting bracket.

  6. Reassembly

Secure the trim panel and mounting screws.

  7. Test and Program

Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition ON. Verify that the 9404 code is cleared. Note: A new instrument cluster may require a dealer to flash the UCM/IC to sync the machine's historical hours to the new display.
