9406

Case IH 9406 – Instrument Cluster (IC) and Engine Control Unit (ECU): No CAN Communication From VCM

Issue description

The Controller Area Network (CAN) bus has lost communication with the Vehicle Control Module (VCM), also referred to as the Universal Control Module (UCM). This triggers an Amber warning lamp on the dash.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Case IH & New Holland Skid Steer Loaders (SSL) (e.g., SR and SV series)
  • Case IH & New Holland Compact Track Loaders (CTL) (e.g., TR270, TV380)
  • Case IH Tractors (including Steiger, Magnum, Puma, and Maxxum series)
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines

Check the cause

  1. Verify the VCM is receiving proper voltage by checking the machine's fuse box for blown fuses or tripped relays.

  2. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the VCM to the Instrument Cluster and ECU for chafed wires, open circuits, or shorts to ground/power.

  3. Disconnect the VCM and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or bent terminals.

  4. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for other active CAN bus errors (such as 'Bus Off' codes) that might indicate a network-wide short rather than a failed module.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the VCM

The location varies by machine (e.g., inside the cab console on tractors, or behind the cab access panel on skid steers).

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged CAN wiring or corroded connectors, repair the harness and re-test communication.

  4. Replace the VCM

If power, ground, and CAN continuity are verified but the module remains unresponsive, the VCM has failed internally and must be replaced. Disconnect the harness and unbolt the module.

  5. Install and Program

Install the new VCM. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the correct software dataset for your specific machine and configure the module parameters (e.g., enabling specific hydraulic options or grid heaters).

  6. Clear Codes

Use the EST to clear the 9406 fault code and verify that the Amber warning light turns off.
