Case IH 95 – TMF (Tractor Management Function): The steering angle sensor is above the expected operating range.

Issue description

The signal voltage returning from the steering angle sensor to the controller is higher than the maximum normal operating limit. This typically points to a sensor that has physically over-rotated, a short to power in the sensor wiring, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect Wiring and Connections: Check the sensor cabling connections to ensure the sensor is not disconnected and that there are no shorts to power causing the voltage to spike above the limit.

  2. Check Mechanical Linkage: Inspect the mechanical arm and linkage connecting the steering mechanism to the sensor. The fault is often caused by the sensor rotating near or beyond its physical voltage limit.

  3. Verify Center Voltage: Using a multimeter or the tractor's diagnostic display, check the sensor's voltage output. With the wheels pointing straight ahead, the sensor should typically read around 2.5 volts.

Repair steps

  1. Adjust the Linkage

    If the sensor is over-rotating, shorten the mechanical linkage to produce less sensor rotation during full-lock turns.

  2. Center the Sensor

    Loosen the mechanical arm clamp at the sensor. Rotate the sensor's shaft manually until the voltage reads exactly 2.5 volts with the wheels perfectly straight. Tighten the mechanical arm clamp.

  3. Replace the Sensor

    If the sensor fails to output a smooth voltage sweep or is internally shorted, remove the mechanical arm, unplug the wiring harness, and unbolt the sensor from the kingpin/axle housing. Install the new OEM sensor and reattach the linkage.

  4. Perform System Calibration

    A steering angle sensor calibration MUST be performed after adjustment or replacement. Without precise zero-position determination, the auto-guidance system will constantly "hunt" the trajectory and wander off-line. Enter the tractor's calibration mode (via the Pro 700/display or Electronic Management Unit) to set the straight-ahead zero position and the left/right maximum steering lock limits.
