Case IH 96 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function): The steering angle sensor is below the expected operating range.

Issue description

The controller is receiving a voltage or signal from the steering angle sensor that has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This typically indicates an open circuit, a short to ground, a failed sensor, or a mechanical failure/misalignment where the sensor mounts to the steering cylinder.

Check the cause

  1. Use the cab display to clear the fault code and check if it immediately returns to verify if the issue is intermittent

  2. Check the steering angle sensor wire harness for physical damage, pinched wires, or corrosion at the connectors that could cause an open circuit or a short to ground

  3. Inspect the steering cylinder and sensor housing for physical damage or mechanical misalignment

  4. Verify the 8-volt reference voltage coming from the TMF controller to ensure the controller itself is not failing

Repair steps

  1. Clear the Code

    Attempt to clear the code via the display monitor. If the code remains active, proceed to physical repairs.

  2. Repair/Replace Harness

    If diagnostic testing reveals a short or break in the wiring, replace the steering angle sensor wire harness.

  3. Replace the Sensor / Cylinder

    If the wiring is intact, the sensor itself has likely failed. On models with external sensors, unbolt the old sensor from the steering linkage/axle and install the replacement. On some newer models (like the 8250 combine), the steering angle sensor is internally integrated into the steering cylinder, requiring you to swap out the entire steering cylinder assembly.

  4. Calibrate the System

    After replacing the sensor or the cylinder, you must perform a steering angle sensor calibration using the tractor's display monitor or a diagnostic service tool (like Jaltest or the Autopilot Toolbox) to teach the TMF controller the new center, left-lock, and right-lock parameters.
