Case IH 98 – TMF (Tractor Multifunction Controller): Battery Voltage is too Low

Issue description

The system has detected that the 12VD (12-volt direct) voltage supply to the controller has dropped below 8 volts.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Magnum 215
  • Magnum 225
  • Magnum 245
  • Magnum 250
  • Magnum 275
  • Magnum 280

  • MX245
  • MX275
  • MX305

Check the cause

  1. Check the resting voltage of the batteries (should be ~12.6V) and perform a load test to ensure voltage does not drop excessively under load

  2. Start the tractor and check the alternator output (charging voltage should be between 13.5V and 14.5V)

  3. Inspect all battery cables, chassis ground connections, and cab ground straps for corrosion and ensure all connections are tight

  4. Trace the wiring harness leading to the TMF module, check connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or spread pins, and measure voltage directly at the TMF power supply pins

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Clean Connections

Remove the battery terminals and main ground straps. Clean them thoroughly with a wire brush and reattach them securely.

  3. Repair Wiring

If your multimeter showed less than 8 volts at the TMF connector but 12+ volts at the battery, locate the break, chafe, or corroded splice in the wiring harness and repair it.

  4. Replace Charging Components

If the battery fails a load test or the alternator is not outputting correct voltage, replace the faulty component.

  5. Replace the TMF Module

If the batteries, alternator, and wiring harness are all in perfect condition and supplying a full 12+ volts to the TMF, but the TMF still logs Code 98, the controller has an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect power, start the tractor, and use the diagnostic display or a service tool to clear the inactive fault codes.
