Case IH 983 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECM): Unused A/D input channel out of range

Issue description

An Analog-to-Digital (A/D) input pin on the engine controller—which is not assigned or configured for use in this specific application—is registering a voltage signal that falls outside of expected parameters.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH Magnum
  • Case IH Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Engine Control Module (ECM) connectors for moisture, water intrusion, or corrosion that could be bridging voltage to an unused pin.

  2. Check the engine wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or short circuits that might be applying a stray voltage signal to an unused A/D channel.

  3. Verify if the ECM has suffered an internal hardware failure.

Repair steps

  1. Consult wiring schematic

Consult the specific engine's wiring schematic to identify the unused pins on the ECM.

  2. Check harness for shorts

Isolate the harness to check for shorts.

  3. Replace Engine Controller

If the harness is intact, replace the Engine Controller.

Parts you might need
