Case IH A-G-170 - Display – Autoguidance / Navigation Controller: Display: Operator Steering Manual Override Detected
Issue description
The autoguidance system detected movement from the steering wheel either at the exact moment the operator pressed the 'Auto' button to engage the system, or while the system was already actively engaged. The system interprets this movement as a manual override by the operator, which safely prevents engagement or disengages the autosteer.

Check the cause
Ensure the operator is completely hands-off the steering wheel during engagement, as even resting a hand on the wheel can trigger the sensor.
Without touching the steering wheel, press the 'Retry' button on the AFS display to see if the automatic mode will engage normally.
Perform a steering dead zone calibration and recalibrate the Wheel Angle Sensor through the AFS display to rule out a drifting sensor.
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the steering wheel sensor and the steering angle sensor to the main harness for chafing, loose pins, or moisture intrusion.
Check for hydraulic pressure spikes or steering valve issues that might cause a slight physical jerk in the steering system.
Repair steps
Identify the Faulty Sensor
Determine if the issue is originating from the Steering Wheel Sensor (located in the steering column) or the Steering Angle Sensor (located on the steering axle/cylinder).
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental hydraulic steering movement or electrical shorts.
Remove the Sensor
For the Steering Wheel Sensor: Remove the steering column covers to access the rotary encoder/sensor. Disconnect the multi-pin sealed wiring interface and unbolt the sensor. For the Steering Angle Sensor: Locate the sensor on the front steering axle. Disconnect the harness and remove the mounting hardware. (Note: On some Flagship combines, the steering angle sensor is integrated internally into the steering cylinder. If this internal sensor fails, the official Case IH repair often requires replacing the entire steering cylinder, though some technicians wire an external sensor as a workaround).
Install the New Sensor
Mount the replacement sensor and torque fasteners to OEM spec. Reconnect the wiring harness.
Recalibrate
Power on the machine. You must perform a full steering calibration (coarse and fine dead zone calibration, and wheel angle sensor calibration) via the AFS display so the Nav Controller learns the new sensor's center and limits.
