Case IH A – Hitch Controller: Battery voltage less than 9.8 volts
Issue description
Indicates battery voltage less than 9.8 volts at the hitch controller, causing the system to enter a 'LIMP' mode. While it points to a low voltage supply, it is very frequently caused by a shorted or failed draft load sensing pin pulling the voltage down.

Check the cause
Test the tractor battery circuit output and inspect the cab power stud (located on the cab floor RH console) for corrosion or loose connections.
Inspect Fuse #7 and Relay #6 (EDC relay) for failure. Note: Relay #6 is only present on tractors below serial number JJA0064978.
Turn the key to 'ON' and test the hitch controller's 16-pin connector. Verify there is power at Pin 14 and a solid ground at Pin 1.
Disconnect the draft load sensing pins to see if the voltage returns to normal and the code clears, which indicates a shorted or failed draft pin.
Repair steps
Resolve Power Supply Issues
Clean the cab power stud and battery terminals. Replace Fuse #7 or Relay #6 if they test bad.
Repair Wiring
If Pin 14 lacks power or Pin 1 lacks ground, trace the wiring harness back to the cab console and repair any shorts or breaks.
Address the Draft Pins
If disconnecting the draft pins restored voltage, either replace the defective draft load sensing pin(s) with new OEM units, or install a Draft Load Sensing Pin Elimination Kit to bypass the defective pins and permanently clear the code.
Replace the Controller
If you have verified a perfect power and ground supply to the controller, the draft pins are not shorting the circuit, and the 'A' code still occurs more than once, the hitch controller itself has an internal fault and must be replaced.
