Case IH C – Electronic Hitch Control (EHC) Module: Upper limit circuit has failed
Issue description
Electrical failure, short, or open circuit in the upper limit potentiometer circuit. The system typically defaults to a 'LIMP' mode to prevent the hitch from over-traveling and causing catastrophic internal housing damage.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MX Maxxum
- 7200/8900 series Magnum
- Case IH Magnum 7200 Series (7210, 7220, 7230, 7240, 7250)
- Case IH 8900 Series (8910, 8920, 8930, 8940, 8950)
Check the cause
Verify Power Supply: Test the tractor battery circuit output. A good power and ground supply to the hitch controller must be verified, as low voltage can trigger false codes.
Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wire harness and connectors leading from the secondary control panel (where the upper limit knob is located) to the hitch controller for damaged wires, corrosion, or loose pins.
Potentiometer Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, test the resistance of the upper limit potentiometer. The OEM specification is 10,000 ohms ± 10% across pins A to C.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor key switch to ensure no power is running to the EHC module.
Access the Potentiometer
Remove the necessary trim on the right-hand secondary control panel to access the back of the hitch control potentiometers.
Test the Component
Disconnect the upper limit potentiometer and probe pins A and C. If the resistance is outside the 9,000–11,000 ohms range, the potentiometer has failed internally.
Test the Harness
If the potentiometer tests good, perform a continuity test on the wiring harness between the potentiometer plug and the main hitch controller plug. Repair any broken wires or shorts to ground.
Replace Faulty Parts
Replace the upper limit potentiometer if it failed the bench test. If both the wiring and potentiometer are perfectly in spec, the Hitch Controller itself has an internal driver failure and must be replaced.
Recalibrate the Hitch
Crucial Step — The hitch system must be recalibrated every time a hitch component (potentiometer, sensor, or controller) is replaced, unplugged, or adjusted.
