Case IH c – Header Controller: Watchdog circuit failure

Issue description

Fault Code C2 indicates a Watchdog circuit failure. The watchdog circuit is an internal hardware/software monitoring system built into the control module that continuously monitors the microprocessor. If the processor locks up, experiences a timing deviation, or the internal circuit degrades, the watchdog circuit triggers a reset and logs this failure, forcing the system into a degraded operational state (Limp2 mode).

Applies to these machines

  • MX Maxxum
  • 7200/8900 series Magnum
  • 2144
  • 2166
  • 2188
  • 2344
  • 2366
  • 2377
  • 2388
  • 2577
  • 2588

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the power: Turn the combine key to the OFF position, wait a few moments, and turn it back to ON to rule out a momentary voltage spike or software glitch.

  2. Check battery voltage: Verify the combine's charging system and battery voltage. High battery supply voltage or severe voltage drops can cause the microprocessor to lock up.

  3. Inspect harness connections: Check the wiring harness and connectors going to the Header Controller for corrosion, moisture, or loose pins.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine

Park the combine on a level surface, lower the header to the ground, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate module

    Locate the Header Control Module.

  3. Disconnect harnesses

Carefully disconnect the multi-pin wiring harnesses from the module.

  4. Remove module

Unbolt the defective Header Control Module from its mounting bracket and remove it.

  5. Install new module

Install the replacement Header Control Module and secure it to the bracket.

  6. Reconnect harnesses

Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the connectors are fully seated and locked.

  7. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the combine's battery.

  8. Calibrate controller

Perform a full Header Controller Calibration using the combine's instrumentation panel (the "A" post monitor). This syncs the new module with the combine's specific header height sensors, concave settings, and joystick controls.
